Beyond Instagram: Photo Editing Apps

*This post originally appeared at iPhone Life where Adam is a featured blogger.

Don’t get me wrong, iPhone Life-ers. I love me some Instagram (my handle is adamcharvey. Follow me!), but sometimes I want to edit and create instead of color correct and experiment with filters. I feel like I can take my superawesome photo skills to the next level and start getting truly creative with my stuff. So, the other day I set out to find some cool photo editing apps.

The choices are insane! So, because I am a kind and magnanimous person, I thought it might be helpful to you guys if I did some weeding for you and picked out some of the ones I think are real winners. I’m sure I’m not the only person who wants to kick my photos up a notch!

360 Panorama

My wife and I do a lot of biking around the beautiful state of Rhode Island, and I love taking landscape images with my iPhone. Sadly, I can’t get everything I want into one frame. So Frustrating! That’s why I’m crazy about 360 Panorama! I can stitch multiple frames together to create a panorama!  Perfect!

Magic Hour

This one is more like a helper than an actual photo editing app, but I think it’s worth a mention.  Have you ever wanted to get a photo in a certain kind of light?  Magic Hour helps you figure out that precise moment in time that the outdoor lighting is perfect for the shot you want to take so you don’t miss it.

WordFoto

Even though my wife is a graphic designer, with this app in my back pocket, I don’t need her to design anything for me! Well, that will never be true, but at least I can do a little something….WordFoto gives me the design tools I need to create graphic images out of my photos. Now, of course, they’re not as good as anything she can do, but I have to say the results aren’t too shabby for an app!

Diptic

With Diptic, I can crop several photos together into a collage or I can flip, rotate and adjust the color contrast and exposure.  There are a bunch of different templates to customize widths, colors and border edges too.  Diptic offers 14 filters and 52 customizable layouts.  I can do this all day…

Camera Awesome

How could I not include something called “Camera Awesome?”  There’s no way, you guys.  While this doesn’t let you get creative on the editing side of things, it does help you take better, more creative shots in the first place, which will inevitably make your editing work easier later on.  Camera Awesome packs the basics of a DSLR into your iPhone.  It has stuff like extra grids, a timer, and “burst” shooting.  You can keep your camera level (always a challenge for me for some reason) with the horizon tool, and you can limit camera shake (also a problem for me.  Must be all the coffee!).  I’m totally crazy about this app and it’s my favorite of all the ones I’ve listed because it helps me shoot faster, sharper, better-exposed shots.  Look ma!  I’m a pro!  And to top it all off, it’s FREE!

But that’s enough about my favorites and me. What are you guys using? How are you enhancing your photos with apps?
